In a conservatoire setting I often felt overloaded with the number of simultaneous projects. Samling was so refreshing because it enabled me to focus on one project at one time. I developed hugely because I was able to focus on a few arias duets and songs, that I wanted to sing, in detail again and again over a few days. Having breakfast lunch and dinner with Sir John Tomlinson as well as a lesson with him everyday was life changing. Someone who has had so many years of doing it and is still doing it was incredible. Something of his relaxed nature also I think rubbed off on me. Now when I am singing roles on stage at Dutch National Opera, as part of the young artist programme there, I will inevitably think of some of his ideas before I go on.
