Emma Kerr

Mezzo-soprano, Samling Artist Programme: 2016

1987–2021

All of us at Samling Institute were very sad to learn of the death in October 2021 of Samling Artist mezzo-soprano Emma Kerr. Emma joined us on the Samling Artist Programme in November 2016, where she worked with Angelika Kirchschlager, Patricia MacMahon, Malcolm Martineau, Simon Lepper and James Garnon. Born in Edinburgh, she studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating with distinction. She was a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist and was a member of Glyndebourne Chorus since 2013, where she was also a Jerwood Young Artist in 2015.

In summer 2020, following the first lockdowns, Emma returned to Glyndebourne for In the Market for Love, the company’s response to Covid-19 performance restrictions, appearing in outdoor summer performances and indoors in October. She also took part in an outdoor concert that summer to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Glyndebourne’s Jerwood Young Artists scheme, where she performed arias from Roméo et Juliette by Gounod and Handel’s Theodora.
