The future of song and opera depends on new generations of performers and audiences being inspired by the magical power of classical music. Samling Artist pianist Jonathan Ware will join Sir Mark Elder and Brindley Sherratt to lead our next Samling Artist Programme in March 2023 and is a familiar face to our Academy Singers. He shares his thoughts on life and music in our Shorts interview.
Our public masterclasses at the end of our Artist Programme residencies have a very special energy that comes from the deep trust that has built up over the course of an intensive week. Photographer Mark Pinder joined us at Marchmont House in November to bring you pictures of the work that goes on behind the scenes of this lifechanging week.
We welcomed new singers and leaders to Samling Academy in October and celebrated a very special birthday. The six days of intensive masterclasses ended with a concert at Sage Gateshead.

An international award nomination for Nardus Williams, artist debuts with opera houses and orchestras, new recordings and a round-up of Samling Artists on Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts
Competition success at Wigmore Hall, two Gramophone Award nominations and appearances by Samling Artists across Europe from Newcastle to Riga.
In our latest newsletter we announce the launch of ‘Samling and Song’, an innovative project offering residencies to Samling Artist singer and pianist duos. We also look ahead to our autumn events, when one of the world’s greatest mezzo-sopranos, Dame Sarah Connolly, will join us for the first time to lead the Samling Artist Programme at Marchmont House.
Many singers and pianists have formed fruitful musical partnerships during our Artist Programme. To help these duos to flourish, whilst also encouraging innovation in the performance of art-song, we are launching Samling and Song, a residency programme in partnership with Marchmont Makers Foundation.
